The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the arrest of the immediate past governor of the state, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing it as part of a broader campaign of political persecution by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sanyinnawal, the PDP alleged that the arrest—carried out on Monday—reflects “the escalating deployment of state institutions as tools of repression against political opposition” under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
According to the party, the EFCC investigation is a politically motivated “fishing expedition” aimed at tarnishing Tambuwal’s reputation and silencing his criticism. It claimed that the matter under probe is an “old phantom” that has repeatedly failed to produce evidence in the past.
“The people of Sokoto State can attest to the fiscal discipline and financial prudence that defined Tambuwal’s eight years in office,” the statement read, adding that the EFCC has ignored genuine corruption cases involving certain APC leaders “for obvious partisan reasons.”
The PDP reiterated its demand for anti-graft agencies to act impartially and uphold their constitutional duties rather than serve “the whims of repressive elements in the corridors of power.”
Expressing confidence in Tambuwal’s “unblemished credibility,” the party urged its supporters and Sokoto residents to remain law-abiding but firm in their pursuit of democracy and good governance.
“We will not be daunted by the repressive schemes of reactionary forces, no matter how highly placed,” the statement concluded.
