Abuja, Nigeria – The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of abandoning its statutory anti-corruption mandate and transforming into the “official attack dog” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, allegedly using selective arrests and investigations to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement on Tuesday, HURIWA said the EFCC’s interrogation and detention of former Sokoto State Governor and serving Senator, Aminu Tambuwal, over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totaling ₦189 billion, was “a politically-orchestrated smokescreen” aimed at intimidating and fracturing the growing opposition coalition determined to unseat President Tinubu in 2027.
The association’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, condemned what he described as the EFCC’s “blatant bias and weaponization of law enforcement,” accusing the commission of targeting opposition figures while ignoring high-profile corruption allegations involving top APC leaders.
According to HURIWA, “This latest action against Senator Tambuwal is part of a calculated campaign of harassment, designed not to serve justice, but to silence dissent and dismantle political resistance.”
The group urged Nigerians to resist what it called “the creeping authoritarianism” in the country and demanded that the EFCC return to its core constitutional duties, free from partisan influence.
