Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), says hosting the International Conference on Biotechnology will help revolutionalise Nigeria’s economy.
Mustapha made this submission on Thursday in Abuja at a news conference ahead of the maiden edition of the international conference scheduled for July 15 to July 19.
According to him, the event scheduled to take place in Abuja, will be a milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit for sustainable economic development and technological advancement.
Mustapha said the conference with the theme “Biotechnology as an Engine for Economic Growth’’ would explore pivotal areas such as agriculture, health, environment and molecular biology.
He said that other areas of focus would be genetic engineering, industry, ethics and intellectual property rights among others.
The director-general listed the key objectives of the conference to include promoting innovation and collaboration between Nigerian and international scientists, researchers and industry leaders.
He also said that enhancing agricultural productivity, advancing healthcare solutions, environmental sustainability and industrial growth and job creation would be looked into during the international event.
“These objectives will guide our discussions and activities during the conference, driving progress and innovation in the field of biotechnology.
“Biotechnology advancements have the potential to stimulate the emergence of new industries and employment opportunities.
“By showcasing cutting-edge research and innovations in biotechnology, the conference can attract investment and foster the growth of biotech-related businesses.’’
The NBRDA boss expressed optimism that by attracting investments, there would be a ripple effect in job creation across various sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, energy and industry.
He said by staying at the forefront of biotechnological advancements, Nigeria and Africa as a whole would enhance their global competitiveness.
Mustapha expressed optimism that knowledge shared at the conference would empower local researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs to innovate and compete on a global scale.
“This can attract foreign investment, partnerships and collaborations, further boosting the economic impact of biotechnology advancements.
“In addition, solutions discussed at the conference can have a direct impact on improving the quality of life for citizens, reducing poverty, and promoting sustainable development,” he said.
Mustapha said the five-day conference would have president Bola Tinubu as Special Guest of honour as well as other important dignitaries. (NAN/MAINSTREAM ng)
