Reps committee pledges effective oversight on Specialty facilities

The House Committee on Specialty Healthcare, has pledged effective oversight on Specialty Healthcare facilities in the country for optimal results.

Rep. Alex Egbona (PDP-Rivers) the Committee Chairman, said this at the inauguration of the Committee on Thursday in Abuja.

“As you may be aware, there are new Orthopaedic and Neuro-Psychiatric Hospitals established in parts of the country that require legislative and legal frameworks.

“The challenge of raising cases of mental health in the country and other health related challenges under the jurisdiction of the committee requires proper oversight and legislative intervention,” he said.

Egbona said that the committee was established pursuant to Sections 62, 88 and 89 of the Constitution and Standing Orders of the House of Representatives to ensure effective oversight of the health sector.

He said that the mandate of the committee covered specialist orthopaedic, psychiatric and eye hospitals, as well as blood transfusion services and ear care centres.

The chairman said that the mandate also included the Obstetrics Fistula Centres, Schools of Dental Technology and Oral Health Programmes in Nigeria, Schools of Occupational Therapy, Colleges of Complementary and Alternative Medicine among others.

The chairman urged all the members to show commitment and dedication in the mandate saying that they had the required expertise to achieve the set goals. (NAN)
